100km in less than 30 hours…
16th Jun 2006 20:06

TEAM: 13:48 Friday, last chance to let me know if you need anything from the essential checklist
UPDATE: The walk is now tommorrow, and as a team we're still drastically low on sponsorship. So if you're reading this and you haven't donated then please, please, please do consider it!
UPDATE: Some of the best conditions on Pledges: "...plus an extra £1 per square inch of chaffage on my inner thighs. It needs to be horrible, bumby red chaffage, or it doesn't count." "..you have to do the walk naked 'cept for your walking boots and jacket, willy dangling in the wind, free and loose!!!" "You wear a pineapple on your head for the whole journey"
On July 15th myself and 3 friends are doing the Oxfam Trailwalker trek. The brief is, well, brief:
"Trailwalker UK is a 100km trek across the South Downs of England, starting in Petersfield and ending in Brighton. You and three friends have 30 hours to complete the trek and you must stay together as a team for the duration of the challenge."
There's no opportunity to sleep, and rest stops are going to have to be minimal if we're going to complete it in time. It's going to be absolutely physically and mentally exhausting. Army cadets do the same walk with a slightly less inviting title. They call it 'The Death March'. Perhaps most gruelling of all I'm going to be away from the Internet for a full 30+ hours. No Google for more than a full day? What if someone asks me a question I don't know the answer to?! I shudder to think. (That said, I'm taking a compact camera and a Dictaphone, so I promise the whole event will be thoroughly Blogged the next day for your amusement. When I'm unable to walk). I've just set up an online sponsorship form, and I'd be really, really grateful to anyone who's willing to sponsor me on this. We need to raise £1000 in less than a month. www.bmycharity.com/robswan It's an Oxfam event raising money for the Gurkah Welfare Trust (I spent 4 months in Nepal shortly before moving to Brighton so I feel a certain affinity to the place. Plus I promise I'll be wearing those very same boots and jacket I conquered Everest Base Camp in!). So... one final time, please, please, please, sponsor me at the link below. It doesn't matter how little you give - it's the thought that'll keep me walking on through the night!

Sponsor me!
