Information for the public
Are you thinking of paying someone to make you a website?
If you are considering commissioning a bespoke website it is absolutely essential that you produce a proper specification document before the job begins.
You wouldn't pay a builder to build your house without getting an architect to draw up a detailed blueprint, so why would you employ anybody to build your website without a proper specification first?
- Your project will run more smoothly
- Your web designers will know exactly what you want
- Your project is far more likely to stick to a schedule
- Your project is less likely to run over budget
- When the job is finished you can be confident you have received the work that you have paid for
- Your actual needs will be determined by an impartial third party with no invested interest in specific technologies or products
- Your project will probably cost less than it would have done without a proper specification
But who should be responsible for this planning: the client or the web company? Most clients feel it's the job for their web design company, and most web design companies feel it's a job for their clients. The sad truth is that this often results in nobody planning the job properly and no technical specification being committed to paper.
That's where I can help. I can take the pain out of the development process by working with you during the planning stage of your project.
Before you approach a web design company I can sit down with you, and together we can work out exactly why you need a website and what you need that website to do, in complete detail. I can then give you a completed document to take to your web development company.
When your website has been finished I can even check your website against your specification to provide impartial determination of whether or not your project has been completed properly.
If you understand your technical specification for the website you are buying then you are put back in control in a world you may otherwise feel very lost in.
